When we imagine how things could go wrong, we play out scenarios in our heads, for instance, losing our job, not getting a promotion, receiving negative news from a medical test, our partner leaving us, or cheating on us. Maybe these things happened to us in the past, or we are afraid they will happen in the future. Often, these scenarios could not be further from reality because we are excellent at what we do for a living, and the man we are with loves us just as much as we love him. We seem to play out scenarios with negative outcomes to prepare ourselves for the worst. At least, that is what we are telling ourselves. I want to think it through to protect myself, be prepared when it happens, and try to deal with the devastation and come out of it stronger.
The movies in our minds come from deep within us. We have many tempting thoughts that sound reasonable as to why we need to play out negative scenarios in our heads. However, when we give into these visions, we also give into the fear and other accompanying emotions. And those emotions linger within us even after we have played out a scenario. At that point, we felt pain, anger, frustration, fear, and devastation. And those feelings are real even though they are based on an imaginary situation. That means we are subconsciously confirming our fears. He is going to leave me. I am not good enough to deserve that promotion. I can’t be that lucky to have a job I like. Of course, my body is giving up on me. We are essentially confirming that we are not worthy of what we truly want: A happy life. A joyful life. A life filled with all the things we genuinely envision for ourselves. We often go further down the rabbit hole and add more hardship and intense feelings to our imaginary scenes. Once fear takes over, the movies darken.
The question to ask ourselves when we are tempted to play out those limiting and painful scenarios is, why not sit with what we want to see in our future instead? Why not sit with what we believe our future to be? Just imagine sitting with your visions of a beautiful, joyful, and deeply fulfilling life and the emotions that come with these visions.
When we shift our gaze to the open and bright future we see and want to create, we also experience the positive feelings and accompanying emotions, and they are beautiful. A warmth spreads through us, and our heart fills with so much love, seeing ourselves happy & joyful in the future. We sense our power to create that life in this moment. We believe in fulfilling our dreams, actively creating the life we want, trusting our capabilities, and being confident in our worth.
It is up to us what movies we play out in our heads. It is up to us to switch channels when we disagree with the program. The happiness of this moment, the joy, the beauty – all of it is real, and we have the power to create the most fulfilling life for ourselves.
